The island’s new responsible tourism campaign is prompting a fresh conversation about how visitors and residents can share Majorca – with care, respect and empathy
Majorca’s turquoise coves, emerald waters and rugged peaks are steeped in history and culture – its villages and communities shaped over generations by local traditions, families and a way of life rooted in the Mediterranean. It’s home to almost one million people and, every year, hosts millions more who arrive to experience its landscapes, culture and island lifestyle.
Now, a new tourism campaign, ‘I take care of you, you take care of me’, is inviting visitors to see Majorca through a different lens – one built on empathy, mutual respect and shared responsibility.
Promoted by the Mallorca Responsible Tourism Foundation of the Consell de Mallorca, in collaboration with Sustainable Balearic Islands and the Government of the Balearic Islands, the campaign puts coexistence at the heart of the island experience.
The idea? Majorca shares its landscapes, heritage, culture and way of life with the world and, in return, visitors can help take care of the island. It recognises that behind every street, beach and landscape is a community that gives life to Majorca every day of the year. For agents, it is a positive message to pass on to clients: enjoying the island and caring for it can be part of the same holiday.
Responsible travel does not compromise on enjoyment – instead it harbours authenticity. Rather than regarding Majorca only as a holiday destination, it invites visitors to see it as a place where parents walk their children to school, neighbours meet for coffee in the village square, local producers serve their communities and beaches remain part of everyday life long after summer has ended.
The campaign encourages visitors to embrace that reality through small, thoughtful gestures such as respecting the peace of local neighbourhoods, keeping beaches and natural spaces clean, following local customs and supporting independent businesses.
At the heart of the campaign is a distinctly Mediterranean idea: when someone welcomes you into their home, you treat it with care by entering respectfully, adapting to their customs and leaving with the warmth of having been welcomed, hoping to have given something back in return.
It is much the same with a destination. Majorca is a place with history, community and a way of life that deserves to be respected and preserved. ‘I take care of you, you take care of me’ is ultimately about those everyday gestures that can make a real difference – for visitors, residents and the island itself.
Clients are just asked to respect three simple things: the island, its rhythms and the people who call it home. In return, Majorca will continue to offer travellers a place they can feel at home in.
