For 208 years Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of Bulgaria and one of the most influential towns in Medieval Europe. The atmosphere of the town is preserved up to the present. The Tsarevets castle is evidence for its greatness. We head to the ancient Roman town with a specific urban system –Nikopolis ad Istrum, located near Veliko Tarnovo and Gorna Oryahovitsa. We continue to the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa that treasures interesting history, a number of green spots and irresistible culinary delights. We stop at Sv. Prorok Iliya Monastery, whose unique monastery bell was proclaimed for a “Bell of life on Earth” by the United Nations in 1995. Our next stop is Dryanovo– located at the foot of Stara Planina – a symbol of the Bulgarian National Revival, the cradle of the free spirit. A sense of calm and humility overwhelms us on the doorstep of the richly painted Dryanovo Monastery – a witness of many struggles for liberation.
