Manchester airport delays warning due to M56 closure

Drivers are being urged to leave enough time to drive to Manchester airport this weekend due to the closure of the M56 motorway.

The airport warned of extensive diversions and “significant delays” due to the full closure of the motorway between junctions five and six from today (Friday) until Monday.

The airport’s website said: “We encourage you to leave enough time to get to the airport.”

Drivers needing to access the airport from the M60 and Manchester will still be able to use the airport spur from the westbound M56 at junction 5.

But people heading towards the airport along the eastbound M56 from North Wales and Liverpool will need to leave at junction 6 for Hale and follow a diversion.

The airport’s passenger services director Wayne Poole said: “Whilst we are in our summer peak we advise all passengers to leave plenty of time to get to, and complete, their airport journey.

“Diversion routes are in place but the works will inevitably cause traffic congestion at peak times, so passengers should leave additional time to get here.

“We’d also advise passengers allow at least two to three hours to get through the airport and to be ready for security.”
