Shannon airport has launched a security screening system which means there are no more restrictions on liquids for passengers’ hand luggage.
The restrictions were introduced widely in 2006 to tackle potential terrorist threats and meant that containers over 100ml were not allowed in aircraft cabins.
Now the €2.5 million security screening system means passengers can carry bottles of liquids, gels and lotions above the old 100ml limit – such as bottled water, baby food, medicines, drinks, aerosol cans and toiletries – and they can pass through security more quickly than before.
It also makes the removal of laptops from cabin bags a thing of the past.
The airport does advise passengers that liquid restrictions still apply at other airports so may affect them if they are transiting or transferring – and will apply on their return via another hub.
The containers must be resealable containers and must be presented ,if requested, to the security screening officers.
Heathrow airport aims to upgrade its security scanners to enable passengers to keep their liquids and electronics inside their bags.
It first announced the plans in summer 2019, saying it aimed to invest £50 million in next-generation CT security equipment.
