Manchester Airport Group – which owns and operates Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports – passed more than 90% of pre-pandemic traffic levels in January.
The group saw 3.6 million passengers last month, with 1.6 million at Manchester, 1.8 million at Stansted and almost 137,000 at East Midlands.
In January 2022, Manchester airport served fewer than 750,000 travellers, because of the impact of Omicron testing requirements.
Chris Woodroofe, managing director at Manchester airport, said: “We are delighted to have made such a strong start to 2023, with January’s statistics showing passenger numbers continuing to recover well and operational performance steadily improving.”
January also saw the announcement of the final phase of Manchester airport’s £1.3 billion transformation programme.
The £440 million investment will update Terminal Two (pictured), to bring it in line with the extension that opened to passengers in July 2021.
Woodroofe added: “The announcement of the second phase of our transformation programme is a major milestone for our airport, and a statement of our intent to deliver on our full potential as the UK’s global gateway in the north.
“We are now fully focused on continuing to improve the passenger experience ahead of what promises to be another busy summer.”
Furthermore, MAG announced a partnership with SignLive, which provides deaf customers with interpretation in British Sign Language (BSL) when using and contacting its airports.
