An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 has struck off the island of Crete in Greece, prompting a temporary tsunami warning to be sent to residents, say reports.
The Sun said the quake, with a depth of 62.5 kilometres, was “strongly felt in Crete and Rhodes”.
Reuters said the “strong” earthquake was felt as far away as Egypt in the early morning hours on Wednesday (May 14), but no serious property damage was reported.
The Independent highlighted how Greece is one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone countries and an unprecedented level of seismic activity shook the popular tourist island of Santorini for weeks earlier this year.
“No injuries or serious property damage has been reported following the earthquake, but authorities are urging people to remain vigiliant and are monitoring the situation,” added the Independent.
The warning about a possible tsunami was issued on social media by Greece’s Ministry for Climate Crisis & Civil, advising those in the local area to get away from the coast.
