Paris faces month-long Covid lockdown amid third wave fears

Paris of faces a month-long lockdown as the country fears a third wave of Covid-19.

Some 21 million people in 16 areas of France will be placed under the measures from midnight today (Friday).

The action is being taken after France recorded more than 35,000 new infections within the past 24 hours.

Prime minister Jean Castex warned that a “third wave” of infections in the country was looking increasingly likely.

Non-essential businesses will be forced to close but schools will remain open.

However, the new measures will not be as strict as the previous lockdown, with people allowed to exercise outdoors within six miles of their home.

But they will not be allowed to travel to other parts of the country unless they have a valid reason.

Those in the affected areas will have to fill out a form to explain why they have left their homes.

A nationwide curfew will remain in place, beginning an hour later at 7pm, taking into account the longer hours of daylight in summer, the BBC reported
