Beverley Travel has come to the aid of more than 30 Rugby League fans after record snowfall in the US affected clients flying to a major fixture this coming weekend.
The Yorkshire-based travel agency has booked travel and accommodation for more than 300 fans attending this Saturday’s fixture between Hull Kingston Rovers and Leeds Rhinos in Las Vegas, with many flying via New York in advance to extend their trips in the US.
Agency director Kelly Cheesman said around 30-40 of the agency’s clients were in need of immediate help after Winter Storm Hernando hit the US last Sunday.
The agency is already a specialist in booking travel to Rugby League fixtures, and said clients had been relieved the agency had been able to come to the rescue at their time of need.
She admitted: “It’s been a busy week and a lot of work. They were all going out on different days and we’ve had least 30 to 40 people who have been displaced because of the weather, mainly those going via New York for two or three nights.
“We’ve had to rebook them and check them all in to get them rerouted to where they need to be and given them advice. We have booked mainly Hull KR fans but also some Leeds fans too.”
More than 5,500 international and domestic flights were affected by the snow storm, with states of emergency declared across large swathes of the northeast US. Almost all flights from key US east coast hubs were cancelled on Monday, where about 19 inches of snow continued to hamper travel.
Operations were suspended and flights grounded at key international gateways of New York JFK and Boston airports.
In total, thousands of Rugby League fans have travelled from the UK to the US for the Betfred Super League, alongside the NRL, for the triple-header at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Cheesman said the agency had organised travel and hotels since the event started three years ago and also gave advice to customers on how to book match tickets and where to sit in the stadium.
“We tend to mop up around 10% of the UK fans but it’s higher this year. Our competition is the internet but this shows that we are the experts and we are there when help is needed,” she added.
The agency has also arranged travel, including 12 coach transfers, and accommodation for Rugby League fixtures in France this summer.
Cheesman, who is actually a fan of another Hull Rugby League team, Hull FC, flew out today (February 26) to be at the event and watch the games after ensuring all customers’ flights were sorted out.
“Customers all have my mobile number if anything goes wrong,” she said, adding: “Given we [my family] don’t support Hull KR it’s quite humbling that they all chose to book with us!”
Flying out from Humberside via Amsterdam direct to Las Vegas with KLM with her husband, Cheesman also bumped into fellow agents Eliot and Steph Clawson, who run a Travel Counsellors agency and were attending the same fixture. The pair specialise in travel for cheerleaders.
“I didn’t realise they were going to be on the same flight, we just met on the train,” added Cheesman.
