Scottish airline to start second route to John O’Groats

An airline minnow is to serve the north of Scotland with flights from Glasgow.

Air Charter Scotland is to operate three returns a week to Wick John O’Groats Airport from August 15.

The new route comes as the carrier secured continued Scottish government investment in Public Service Obligation (PSO) air services to maintain regional connectivity between Aberdeen and Wick with four flights a week, having first won the contract in January following a competitive tender process.

Almost £1.8 million in state aid has been awarded to support the two air links to Wick, with the Glasgow service supported until August 14, 2027.

Air Charter Scotland will continue to work with Dutch carrier AIS Airlines as operating partner, using its 18-seat BAe Jetstream 32 aircraft.

About 1,800 passengers have been flown on the Aberdeen-Wick service since the route was taken over following the collapse of Eastern Airways last October.

The new Glasgow service addresses a long-standing demand from the local community and providing new opportunities for business, healthcare, tourism and economic growth, according to The Highland Council.

The airline’s chief operating officer Derek Thomson said: “Since taking over the service in January, our focus has been simple.  Deliver a reliable operation, provide exceptional customer service and build trust within the communities.

“The introduction of Wick–Glasgow is particularly exciting. It will provide even greater opportunities for residents and businesses across the North Highlands; improved access to Scotland’s central belt, while maintaining the essential Aberdeen service that supports onward domestic and international travel.”

He added: “Now Air Charter Scotland has become established serving scheduled service operations its future focus will be on determining future aircraft types.
