Maverick enjoys life on the rails
FORMER Thomson Holidays managing director Richard Bowden-Doyle is a bit of a maverick at heart – it’s no wonder he’s relishing his new role as trainline.com chief operating officer. The contrast with his previous job couldn’t be more marked. At Thomson he was once in charge of 10,000 people, whereas now he mucks in with about a dozen.
But that’ll suit Bowden-Doyle because he likes getting stuck in as one of the lads – he’s never really been comfortable in a big ivory tower.
His brief is to increase customers and add new products to the site, which currently only sells domestic rail travel.
He’ll be happier being one of the people who does the work rather than just watching others do it.
He also knows he’ll be able to go to industry conferences and have a few sherbets and a good old sing song – something that was severely frowned upon when he was a major player in a public company.
Bowden-Doyle has revealed that he’s following the Blair revolution and leaving his posh suits in the cupboard. In his new environment, it’s all jeans and T-shirts. Just don’t turn up to a presentation in a snazzy new leather jacket.
