Tropical storm forces closure of Mauritius international airport

A tropical storm has forced the closure of Mauritius international airport.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International airport will be closed from 7pm local time on February 26 “until further notice,” the Foreign Office warned.

An updated travel advisory said: “A cyclone warning is currently in force in Mauritius.

“Severe Tropical Storm Garance will continue to affect the weather in Mauritius this week. Widespread heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected.

“Travellers should contact their airlines for travel updates.

“Stay in a safe place and follow instructions and updates from local authorities closely.”

The airport said: “Intending passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for further information on the status of their flights and not to proceed to the airport, unless receiving confirmation of the revised departure time.”

Operator Airports of Mauritius “apologises for any inconvenience caused and reassures the public that it intends to resume its activities as soon as possible”.

British travellers visiting Mauritius in need of urgent consular assistance can make contact by phone on +230 660 4900 and pressing option 2, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said.
