Discover Egypt has seen growth in trade sales following the full opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo on November 1.
The independent tour operator said agents’ sales are currently up by 17% compared to last year.
In the month following the museum’s opening, sales rose by 27% compared to October, with more clients opting for the 10-day Classic Egypt rather than seven-night classic Nile cruise.
Located beside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the GEM showcases 100,000 artefacts, including the first complete display of Tutankhamun’s treasures.
Philip Breckner, Discover Egypt director, said: “With the GEM now fully open, Egypt has entered a new chapter. The museum is extraordinary, unlike anything else in the world, and it is understandably driving interest from travellers and agents alike.
“Our role is to equip the trade with the specialist knowledge, flexibility and product range they need to maximise this momentum. We’re committed to giving agents the very best tools to sell this timeless destination.”
Traveller’s World in Salisbury is one of several agencies that is working with Discover Egypt to capitalise on the growing interest in the destination.
It has installed an Egyptian-themed window display and senior travel consultant Sarah Sims recently took a Nile cruise on board Alexander the Great.
She said: “I travelled to Egypt as a solo female traveller which is very popular at the moment. I wanted the serenity of a cruise on the Nile while being able to enjoy the incredible sights Egypt offers.
“The cruise was perfect, [being] part of a small group yet able to sit and watch the scenery go by when I wanted to be anonymous.
“The food quality onboard was outstanding and I now can’t wait to go back to visit the museum.”
Vicki Curnick, senior travel consultant at Traveller’s World, added: “Sales for Egypt as a destination have been relatively strong for the past couple of years. We like the expertise and value that Discover Egypt offer and we have built up a strong relationship.
“The GEM museum is certainly creating a further buzz and has been long awaited.
“Our window display always creates interest and Egypt is no exception – particularly on these wet miserable winter days.”
To take advantage of the increased demand, Discover Egypt has expanded its programme, including introducing the Farouz El Nil Dahabiya to its Nile cruise portfolio.
This smaller vessel with just six cabins can use landing jetties along the Nile that are inaccessible to larger ships, giving travellers the chance to explore quieter stretches of the river.
A seven-night Nile cruise on the Dahabiya, combined with three nights in Cairo at the boutique Villa Belle Epoque is already proving popular, said the operator.
The 10-night holiday with flights and transfers, including three nights at Villa Belle Epoque followed by a seven-night full-board Dahabiya cruise costs from £3,745.
