The former boss of Fred Olsen Travel has come out of retirement to open his own travel agency.
Steve Williams, who spent two decades as managing director of the miniple, returned to the high street by opening Go Explore Travel in Halesworth, Suffolk.
After retiring a year ago, Williams quickly discovered that life away from the industry he loves was not the right fit.
He returned to the trade by opening the Go Explore branch ahead of the turn of year peaks period.
Williams reunited with former colleague Stacey Hammond, who joined him as manager of the branch.
The move to independent agency ownership represents a major shift for Williams, who has partnered with Advantage Managed Services (AMS) to support the new venture.
He said: "I have always been passionate about retail travel.
"It’s exciting to see that, at a time when the high street is facing challenging times, travel agencies are returning as travellers look for the expertise that they provide on a face-to-face basis."
He added: "Having worked with Advantage throughout my time at Fred Olsen Travel, it was a natural choice.
"I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by the wide range of support that they provide small business owners like myself."
Advantage Travel Partnership head of business development David Moon said: "We are delighted to welcome Steve as an Advantage Managed Services member.
“We have always enjoyed a great relationship with him and in his new capacity as a travel business owner, we couldn’t be more excited to help support his growth."
Williams was honoured for Outstanding Contribution at the 2023 Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Awards in recognition of his role overseeing a business encompassing retail, homeworking, a tour operation and GSA teams.
