Canary Islands woos airlines with €200,000 incentive

The Canary Islands is offering airlines an incentive of up to €200,000 to create new routes to La Palma.

The minister for tourism, industry and trade, Yaiza Castilla, aims to develop 18 new European air links with the initiative.

She said airline sales on the routes will be “reinforced” by marketing campaigns in the countries of origin, which include the UK.

“During the summer, La Palma’s connection with foreign countries fell by 16.8%, a drop that is expected to increase in winter, with forecasts that it will fall to up to 21.8%,” she said.

“Therefore, the purpose of this aid is focused on increasing international connections with the aim of attracting more foreign tourists.”

As well as the UK, the selected routes connect La Palma with Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway and Sweden.

Canary Islands Tourism has also selected routes in important cities in Germany and the UK, which have airports with a high volume of flights to the rest of the islands, that do not yet connect with La Palma.
