Manchester airport had its busiest December on record last month after serving more than 2m passengers.

The total figure of 2,022,905 marked the first time that the airport had served more than 2m passengers in the month of December.

The top three destinations were Dublin, Amsterdam and Dubai, each of which had more than 90,000 passengers flying to them.

Chris Woodroofe, the airport’s managing director, said he was “extremely proud” about the record-breaking December.

He added: “It shows that we’re giving the people of the region what they want via our extensive route network – offering choice unrivalled outside London.”

The airport reported that December was the “third consecutive month that passenger numbers outstripped pre-pandemic (2019) levels”.

The vast majority of passengers (99.3%) are said to have got to security in 15 minutes or less, with nobody waiting for more than half an hour.

In December, the Dublin route recorded 91,307 passengers, Amsterdam had 91,053, Dubai had 90,391, Tenerife had 81,567 and Paris (Charles de Gaulle) had 67,309.

More than 30,000 went to Finland, with many heading to see Santa in Lapland.

The ski season means the airport currently serves more than 200 destinations.
