The city of San Francisco is the starting point for the Giant Trees and Ancient Forests Road Trips USA itinerary. Start by spending some time in the city, where there’s a lot to be discovered.
The Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most famous landmark, stretching almost 1.7 miles into San Francisco Bay. Cycling across the bridge is one of the best ways to take in the views over the bay. From here, you’ll also spot Alcatraz Island, home to the notorious former prison.
Fisherman’s Wharf is a bustling area that visitors should make time for, with some delicious seafood restaurants (try the clam chowder) and plenty of other attractions. Less than a mile away is Lombard Street, a steep road with hairpin turns that is regarded as the ‘crookedest street in the world’.
Head north out of the city to explore Lassen Volcanic National Park’s diverse terrain, with boiling springs and mud pots. About three hours away is Lake Tahoe – measuring 22 miles by 12 miles – which offers plenty of biking and cycling trails.
The High Sierra Nevada mountains add to the picturesque views on the drive to Yosemite National Park, which spans more than 30,000 hectares and is home to incredible natural formations such as El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall.
Accommodation options include lodges and campsites for those who want to make the most of their time in one of the US’s most famous national parks. Then, return to San Francisco to complete the trip.
