Britons in Bolivian capital urged to stay in ‘safe place’ amid failed military coup

British travellers in the Bolivian capital of La Paz have been advised to stay in a safe place amid a failed military coup.

The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for the South American country in the early hours of this morning (Thursday). 

The alert said: “There have been reports of heightened military activity by a faction of the Bolivian armed forces in La Paz.

“If in La Paz, you should stay in your accommodation or remain in a safe place. Avoid the Plaza Murillo in La Paz and surrounding areas.

“The security situation could change quickly without warning. Remain alert to developments and pay attention to instructions from local authorities if in any other part of Bolivia.”

Bolivian police reportedly arrested the leader of the attempted coup hours after the presidential palace in La Paz was stormed by soldiers

Armoured vehicles and troops withdrew after taking up position on Murillo Square where key government buildings are located. 

The rebel military leader in charge was arrested with Bolivian president Luis Arce condemning the coup attempt.
