Abta publishes guidance on new EU entry systems

Abta has published a range of resources for the trade and consumers ahead of the introduction of new entry rules and systems for travel to the EU.

The information covers the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias), which will apply to UK residents.

The EES is an electronic system to replace the stamping of passports, which is expected to be introduced this autumn. Etias is the EU’s pre-travel authorisation system which is scheduled to be introduced in mid-2025.

The Abta resources include a new hub in the Abta Member Zone, with a Q&A document based on questions raised by members, and online advice for consumers at abta.com/eesandetias.

The association said it had published the information well in advance to provide members with guidance to refer to their customers, with more direct promotion to consumers planned for closer to the launch dates.

Graeme Buck, Abta communications director, said: “EES and Etias are two big changes coming down the line which members and travellers will need to adapt to.

“While many details are still not available about the new systems, we’re keen to share what we know so far with members to help them consider about what they may mean for their businesses and their customers.”

He added: “Abta is working closely with the EU departments responsible for implementing these changes – who recognise us as a crucial partner in getting important information to the UK travel trade and consumers. We’re also speaking to relevant UK government departments about the changes.”
