Wizz Air is deploying a third ultra long range aircraft to its fleet at Gatwick.
News of the expansion came days after the airline confirmed submitting an application to the US Department of Transportation for approval to operate charter flights between the UK and the US.
However, the budget carrier insisted the additional Airbus A321XLR will enable increased frequency of flights to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia from September 1.
The new aircraft will also enable Wizz Air UK to increase frequency on Gatwick routes to Valencia and Prague, offering daily flights to both cities from September.
The extra Airbus will bring the Gatwick-based fleet up to six alongside 15 operating from Luton Airport.
The A321XLR “enables Wizz Air to operate longer routes more efficiently using a single-aisle aircraft,” the airline said.
“Its extra-long range capability opens up new non-stop destinations previously served primarily by wide-body aircraft, allowing passengers to enjoy lower fares, more direct journeys and a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional long-haul operations.”
Wizz Air UK managing director Yvonne Moynihan said: “The allocation of our third A321XLR is a clear signal of Wizz Air’s long-term commitment to the London market.
“London is a city of diversity and our network is intentionally designed to reflect and serve that diversity.
“Adding this aircraft to our Gatwick base strengthens our ability to offer more direct routes to an even greater variety of destinations, including our unique long range connections to Saudi Arabia.
“Our lower fares enable greater choice for customers travelling from the capital, while continuing to operate one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the industry.”
