Delta Air Lines has signalled further international long-haul expansion with a order for new generation Airbus aircraft.
The US carrier has placed a firm order for 16 A330-900s and 15 A350-900s for an undisclosed sum.
Once delivered, Delta’s widebody fleet will have grown to 55 A330neos and 79 A350s, including 20 A350-1000s expected to be delivered from early 2027.
The airline’s current Airbus backlog is around 200 aircraft and includes the latest A350-1000 iteration.
The airline said: "The A350’s extended range and performance capabilities enable Delta’s continued growth into key long-haul markets in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the South Pacific – such as recently launched or announced services to Taipei, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Riyadh.
"The order is within Delta’s previously announced capital expenditure and capacity targets.”
Chief executive Ed Bastian said: “As we grow our international footprint and prepare our fleet to serve expanded long-haul markets, these aircraft will enhance our capabilities and elevate our premium offerings.
“We value our long-standing partnership with Airbus, and with these widebody aircraft we will see additional operational efficiencies and long-term cost benefits in the years to come.”
Airbus commercial aircraft business sales executive vice president Benoit de Saint-Exupery added: “Delta’s renewed confidence in both the A330neo and the A350 is a testament to our enduring partnership and the excellence of the Airbus widebody family performance.
“These aircraft offer the range, capacity, and premium cabin experience Delta requires to grow into new markets and connect more of the world.”
