UK flight cancellations drop to lowest level since 2019

Flight cancellations in the UK for the first half of this year have hit their lowest level since 2019, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

For the first six months of 2023, 6,665 flights departing from UK airports were cancelled, equating to 1.53% of all scheduled departures.

In H1 2022, although the UK saw fewer cancellations (6,367), that was a larger proportion of all departures – giving the UK a flight cancellation rate of 1.82%.

However, the UK’s flight cancellation rate remains double that of H1 2019, when only 0.75% of departures were cancelled, said Cirium.

In H1 2020, as the pandemic struck, the rate topped 10%. It was 1.82% in the first half of 2021.

A cancellation is defined as a flight being axed within 72 hours of its scheduled departure time.
