Growing Indian airline IndiGo is to make its Heathrow debut this autumn.
Daily flights have been scheduled from October 26 using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways.
Confirmation of the London service from an unspecified destination in India, expected to be Mumbai, came as part of a range of strategic developments as part of plans by Indigo to become a global airline.
IndiGo will receive five additional B787-9 Dreamliners in the current financial year under a lease arrangement with Norse Atlantic.
This will enable the airline to launch new international routes while strengthening its existing long-haul network.
The daily, direct flights from India to Heathrow are subject to regulatory approvals.
The expansion to the Uk follows the start of flights connecting Mumbai with Manchester and Amsterdam.
IndiGo also signed an agreement with Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic to build an partnership connecting India with Europe and North America. IndiGo also enhanced partnerships with KLM and Japan Airlines.
The airline further strengthened its network by entering into a codeshare agreement with Jetstar, offering one-stop connectivity to 14 destinations across Australia and New Zealand.
IndiGo announced converting 30 purchase rights for 70 Airbus A350 aircraft, into a firm order, taking its total wide-body aircraft order to 60.
Chief executive Pieter Elbers said: “As we celebrate IndiGo’s 19th anniversary, we are immensely proud of the journey we have had so far and equally excited about the way ahead.
“Today, we are delighted to announce our next strides in international markets, especially our daily, direct flights to London Heathrow.
“Looking ahead, we are hopeful to continue winning hearts and accolades in India as well as globally, as we expand our operations across the globe, one airport at a time.”
