Overcoming obstacles
This year has posed significant challenges for the travel industry, including the ongoing cost-of-living crisis to extreme heatwaves and wildfires across Europe this summer.
But, with the help of Sojern’s insights, it’s clear that travellers continue to adapt and make informed choices despite these challenges. Forward-looking data suggests that European destinations continue to attract visitors from around the world during the festive season, and outbound travel from European regions continues to increase.
Looking specifically at data* for December 2023, flight bookings from Europe to global destinations are up 11% compared to the same month last year. The Middle East, which includes popular destinations such as Dubai and Saudi Arabia, has experienced the most significant improvement, with the number of flights booked from Europe to the region jumping by 16%.
In terms of the global destinations European travellers are choosing to visit for the festive period, New York City retains its top spot for the second consecutive year. Dubai and Bangkok also remain favourites, while Miami seems to be increasing in popularity as it claims a spot in the top five for the first time.
Data also shows an upswing in hotel searches, with the number of reservations made by European travellers to global destinations up by 33% compared to 2022.
Sojern has also found that flights departing from Europe for destinations within Europe, the US and the Middle East will see an upward lift from around December 18, peaking on December 22-23 and tapering off on December 24 and 25.
