Students complete pilot scheme aiming to boost diversity in cruise industry

Clia UK & Ireland managing director Andy Harmer has hailed the success of a pilot programme aiming to create greater social mobility, diversity and inclusion in the travel and cruise industry.

The Compass Project, created by Mundy Cruising owners Matthew and Edwina Lonsdale, saw 10 Year 12 students from St John Bosco College in Battersea participate in eight off-site days designed to improve their industry knowledge and career prospects.

Students visited two cruise ships – Anthem of the Seas and Seven Seas Splendor – in Southampton and spent two additional classroom days with a training and development consultant.

The project concluded on July 6 with presentations made by the students titled ‘Why I should recommend a friend to apply for a job in cruise’, which were attended by industry representatives.

St John Bosco College said it plans to reintroduce the programme during the next academic year as part of its Year 12 curriculum, and is looking to expand the project via a Southampton-based college.

“The cruise industry is a vibrant, innovative and inspiring place to work and, thanks to all the students’ hard work, they now represent a talented pool of applicants who are ready to take their first employment steps,” said Harmer.

“The Compass Project has been a huge success and we’re looking forward to seeing the opportunities it now opens up for our first student cohort, as well as the longer term plans for the initiative itself.”

He added: “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone involved.”

Edwina Lonsdale said: “During the planning stages, we couldn’t have begun to imagine what an energising and inspiring experience this would be.

“The students have been engaged and charming and the time and commitment from so many individuals within the cruise industry has been extraordinary.”
