Wendy Wu hails rebound of ‘sexy and cool’ touring holidays sector

Wendy Wu, the founder of Wendy Wu Tours, has hailed the “expertise and knowledge” of travel agents in the “sexy and cool” touring sector.

Speaking at the Association of Touring and Adventure Suppliers (Atas) conference in Liverpool, she said: “As soon as customers come to a travel agent, they are ready to use experts, so they can be a touring customer.”

She advised them to use their knowledge to inspire clients, such as highlighting the ancient and modern attractions of Japan, visiting Wadi Rum in Jordan, or following in the footsteps of TV star Joanna Lumley who has filmed travelogues in China.

Wu told delegates how classic touring had evolved over the past 25 years, with clients becoming more demanding – asking for more immersive experiences with local people, trying local cuisine and opting for “unique” experiences.

Her company has adapted to these trends by offering different touring options, such as the bullet train in Japan or ‘Go Beyond’ holidays that take clients to more remote areas.

Solo holidays are also seeing growth, while Christmas tours have been added to destinations such as China and Japan.

The Asia specialist also broadened its range of destinations amid the Covid pandemic, offering UK, Ireland, European and Middle Eastern tours.

Wu explained how its holidays in Portugal uncovered attractions that explored the Portuguese history of exploration around the world – and developed a new Mekong cruise ship to explore less crowded river routes to support impoverished local communities.

Next for its portfolio will be South Africa, and she is “thinking” of Saudi Arabia after that, added Wu.

“Customers know we are the touring specialist; they will go anywhere with us,” she said.

She added: “Out of the ashes we flew, like a phoenix.”
