Expedia launches trip planning option powered by ChatGPT

Expedia has launched a travel planning service powered by artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

Users of the online travel agency’s app can start a conversation to get recommendations about places to go, where to stay and what to see and do.

Hotels discussed in the chat are automatically saved to a “trip” in the app, making it easier for users to start choosing dates, checking availability and adding on flights, cars or activities.

Peter Kern, vice-chairman and chief executive at Expedia Group, said: “As the leader in travel tech, Expedia continues to build out the core operating system for the industry, constantly enhancing capabilities and making trip planning faster, simpler and even more informative.

“By integrating ChatGPT into the Expedia app and combining it with our other AI-based shopping capabilities, like hotel comparison, price tracking for flights and trip collaboration tools, we can now offer travellers an even more intuitive way to build their perfect trip.”

Expedia also recently built a plugin for ChatGPT so a traveller can start a conversation directly on the ChatGPT site, then book when they are ready with the OTA.

With ChatGPT now within the Expedia app, users can access exclusive discounts and rewards for their trip.
