Tributes have been paid to Sandy Murray, organiser of the Yorkshire Travel Trade Ball, following her death on Saturday aged 78 after a period of ill health.
Murray, of Sandy’s Travel Escapes, had been involved in raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for various charities through the event.
More than £130,000 had been raised over a quarter of a century prior to last year’s ball.
The event marked its 25th anniversary in 2023, raising £5,000 for a range of charities.
Among those paying tribute online was James Broughton, former partner marketing manager at Leeds Bradford Airport.
He said: “Deeply saddened to see the new of the passing of a very special woman, Sandy Murray - a true legend in the trade industry and someone who meant so much to many of us over the years.
“Known far and wide for her glittery dresses and boundless energy, she was the heart and should behind the Yorkshire Travel Trade Ball for over 20 years - and event that brought the industry together like no other.
“Back in the day, I affectionally called her my ‘travel mum’ - and she really was. From work trips overseas to countless events to her surprise 70th birthday, she was always great company and it’s moments like those that I’ll remember forever.”
Idle Travel owner Tony Mann, who is organising this year’s Yorkshire Travel Trade Ball, which takes place on September 25, said the event will include a tribute to Murray and a celebration of her life.
He added: “I intend to make her really proud. She was warm, lovely, funny and caring - one in a zillion. I was very lucky to have her in my life.”
Reuben’s Retreat founder Nicola Graham said in a tribute: "Your beautiful Yorkshire travel ball is woven into our story and your beautiful thread and sequins shine brightly today on that tapestry of our journey.
"Bless you Sandy Murray you were and always will be #oneinamillion."
Not Just Travel senior trade business development manager Emma Holliday said: “Sandy was always full of colour and sparkle.
“The travel industry has lost not just a friend but a legend too, the passion and work you put into the Yorkshire Ball for over 20 years – we will be forever grateful.”
Ambassador Cruise Line national account manager Louise Tansey added: “You will be sadly missed by all the hearts you reached out to.”
