Stockton Sixth Form College has unveiled more details about its new aviation operations course, making it the only college outside London to offer this industry-led qualification.
Starting in September, the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Aviation Operations will be delivered in partnership with Aviation Generation (AvGen) and is backed by sector giants Boeing, Embraer, British Airways and Heathrow airport.
The two-year course is equivalent to three A-Levels.
Dr Nichole Munro, chief executive of Atomix Educational Trust, which runs the college, said: “This aviation programme builds perfectly upon our expanding technical education infrastructure, including our upcoming state-of-the-art engineering suite currently under construction.
“We’re creating pathways that connect classroom learning directly to industry excellence, ensuring our students are equipped not just with qualifications, but with the practical skills and industry connections that will define their careers.”
Dr Noel Dennis, business development director at the trust, added: “This partnership brings the cockpit to the classroom in ways we’ve never seen before.
“Our learners will gain hands-on experience, working directly with key industry players, positioning them for high-value careers across every aspect of aviation – from flight operations and air-traffic management to sustainability and airport logistics.”
Facilities on offer include a flight simulation suite featuring a Piper Warrior simulator and Boeing 737 cabin, allowing students to log supervised simulator hours that mirror professional pilot training.
There will be industry masterclasses, site visits and internship pathways with partner organisations, such as British Airways, Boeing and Heathrow.
Mike Mackin, head of centre at the college, commented: “We’re witnessing the convergence of cutting-edge technology, industry expertise and genuine career opportunity right here on our doorstep.
“Our students will benefit from facilities that rival those found in major aviation training centres, whilst being supported by tutors who understand both their academic potential and their career aspirations.”
Simon Witts, chief executive of Aviation Generation, said: “Together we are preparing the next generation to innovate, decarbonise and keep the world moving, whilst ensuring that students from the Tees Valley have access to the same calibre of training as their counterparts in London and other major aviation hubs.”
