The number of British tourists visiting Brazil rose by almost 20% in the first nine months of the year.
The figure of 133,328 arrivals from the UK between January and September came as the country’s tourist office Embratur reported a record seven million international visits for the period.
The nine month performance saw Brazil surpass the previous annual record of 6.7 million foreign visitors for the whole of last year.
The numbers also exceed an annual goal of reaching 6.9 million international tourists in 2025. The objective was exceeded by 2.9% in the ninth month of the year.
Tourism minister Celso Sabino said: "We are experiencing a historic moment for Brazilian tourism.
“We have already surpassed the annual goal three months ahead of the deadline, which shows the strength of our sector and the confidence of the world in Brazil.”
Embratur president Marcelo Freixo added: "This historical record is the result of serious work by the federal government to rebuild the image of Brazil in the world, as a destination of diversity and sustainability.
“Brazil today is respected and desired by tourists of all nationalities.
“This record number is translated into the lives of Brazilians through jobs, income and opportunity in every part of the country.
“This small businessman who expands his business, the craftsman that sells more, the guide that has more work. Tourism is helping to move the economy and transform lives.”
