German airport strikes affect 1,110 flight departures

Tens of thousands of passengers face disruption today (Friday) due to a strike affecting seven airports in Germany.

The action followed a fifth day of protest action against pension reforms in France on Thursday affecting flights and rail services.

A total of 74 flights from the affected German airports were scheduled to land at UK airports today.

Services to be hit include those to Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and London City airport, according to flight data firm Cirium.

Lufthansa had warned that all flights from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs were being cancelled today.

Cirium calculated that more than 1,110 departures representing 190,000 seats were scheduled from the affected German airports hit by walkouts by the Ver.di union.

Frankfurt airport was due to see the highest number of departures (478), followed by Munich (366), Hamburg (128), Stuttgart (75), Hannover (33), Bremen (19) and Dortmund (18).

Lufthansa was scheduled to operate the most departures (588), followed by Eurowings (81) and Air Dolomiti (34)

There are 74 flights scheduled to depart from the affected German airports to the UK, with Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and London City seeing the highest number of flights, according to Cirium.

Frankfurt airport operator Fraport said: “Due to a strike by Germany’s Ver.di union, operations at Frankfurt airport will be heavily disrupted throughout the day today.

“Passengers are strongly advised to refrain from travelling to the airport. Connecting flights will also be affected by the strike.”

Munich airport confirmed that regular flight operations would be suspended today due to the 24-hour strike running until 1am local time on Saturday.
