Northern Ireland is to adopt a traffic light system for international travel from Monday (May 24), bringing it in line with the rest of the UK which has had a similar system in place since the start of this week.
The BBC reported that the system would be subject to ministerial approval and the green list would be limited.
Deputy first minister Michelle O’Neill confirmed that Portugal would be included on the green list despite reports that health officials had recommended it should be designated as amber.
In line with England, Scotland and Wales, those returning from green list countries will not be required to quarantine but will need to take a PCR test after they return.
O’Neill said the limited green list was “about trying to keep the virus under control”.
In addition to the international easing, travel within the Common Travel Area of the UK, Republic Ireland, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man will also be allowed for non-essential reasons, with those returning no longer required to isolate.
Graham Keddie, managing director of Belfast International Airport, said: “Confirmation from the NI Executive that domestic and international travel is to restart is very welcome news after what has undoubtedly been the most difficult period in the airport’s history.
“We are particularly pleased to see that movement within the Common Travel Area is no longer subject to quarantine restrictions or essential travel only. This will enable us to increase flights between NI and GB allowing people to reunite with friends and family or have a break away.”
He added: “We also welcome the news that Portugal is on the green travel list for international travel. Connection between NI and Portugal is strong, as VINCI Airports is the operator of Belfast International Airport and all Portuguese airports.
“However, with a successful vaccination programme roll out underway in Northern Ireland and infection rates falling significantly, more countries must be added regularly to the green list if the sector is to rebuild and protect as many jobs as possible.”
