Play to operate transatlantic flights from spring 2022

Icelandic carrier Play is to launch transatlantic flights between the UK and US, via Reykjavik, from spring 2022.

The start-up airline will operate the routes between Stansted and Baltimore/Washington International from April 20; and from Stansted to Boston Logan from May 11.

Flights to Baltimore/Washington will depart Stansted four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, with a 1 hour, 25-minute layover in Reykjavik. Flights to Boston will also depart four times a week, with a 1 hour, 50-minute layover.

Tickets go on sale today (December 16) and an introductory fare of £139 is being offered until December 24 on services between April and June 2022, and in September and October, to celebrate the launch.

After the launch price, standard one-way fares start from £169.

Play chief executive Birgir Jónsson said: “Travellers around the world are hungry to venture to new destinations and we’re proud to expand Play’s service to the United States, offering both American and European travellers a new way to reach iconic destinations.

“With our reliable and affordable flights, travellers can enjoy their holiday destination rather than overspending on the flight to get there.”

To date, Play has flown more than 87,500 passengers across Europe.

It has raised more than $80 million to support its start-up. It first applied for permission to fly to the States from the US Department of Transportation in August.
