The European Tourism Association (Etoa) has been named as the first contributor to a sustainable fuels joint venture.
Sustainable technology and nature-based solutions provider Zeero Group has established the Zeeroenergies initiative which aims to dedicate climate funds to the advancement of sustainable biofuel production and a transition away from fossil fuels.
Etoa, the trade association for tour operators selling Europe in global markets, has pledged to contribute funds derived from sales of its B2B events.
Zeeroenergies provides a ‘waste-to-fuel’ project, offering all-in-one sustainable fuel production and waste management.
It uses patented technology to convert organic biowaste, including sewage, agricultural waste and food waste, into biofuel which is claimed to be 81% lower in emissions than fossil fuels.
Besides being used as ‘drop in’ fuels for aviation, marine, and road vehicles, the biofuel can be used to power generators without the need for a refinery, according to the firm.
Zeero Group co-founder and chief executive Nico Nicholas said: “We are thrilled to have the Etoa join our sustainable fuel initiative.
"As a deeply embedded and trusted entity within the travel industry, the association will use its scope and reach to make significant climate fund contributions to Zeeroengeries and help drive the development of biofuels.”
Etoa director general Tim Fairhurst (pictured with Zeero Group co-founder Elkie Nicholas) said: “The public sector must provide an enabling framework to encourage and support positive change, but the industry has a responsibility to develop and champion practical solutions, such as HTL [Hydrothermal Liquefaction] circular biofuels.
"Demand for them is growing, and supply is insufficient. Travel is at the heart of what we and our members do, and where most emissions originate, especially from Europe’s valuable long-haul markets. We are proud to be the first organisation to support the groundbreaking initiative of Zeeroenergies.”
