Flights are being diverted as deadly rainstorms struck Sri Lanka.
The Foreign Office updated travel advice for the country today (Friday) warning of “severe weather”.
More than 50 people are reported to have been killed due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain this week.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: “Sri Lanka is currently experiencing severe weather.
“Heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides which are causing travel disruption across the country.
“Some flights have been diverted, check with your airline or tour operator if you are due to fly.
“Sri Lanka Tourism has a 24 hour hotline available on 1912.”
Colombo airport’s website today showed some inbound flights being diverted to a range of destinations, including Mattala in southern Sri Lanka, as well as Cochin and Trivandrum in India, with other services delayed.
However, Sri Lanka Tourism issued a statement to say that the country “remains safe and open for travel and tourism”.
The tourism organisation saId: “While certain regions may experience seasonal rainfall, the situation is being closely monitored by our national authorities.
“Major tourist destinations are operating as usual, with hotels, transport services, and attractions continuing without disruption.
“Comprehensive safety measures are in place, with tourism partners working closely alongside local authorities to ensure your comfort and security.”
