An advisory for British travellers to Morocco was issued last night (Thursday) after deadly anti-government protests across the country.
The Foreign Office updated its travel advice to the North African nation amid reports that three people had been killed by police and hundreds arrested.
“Country-wide protests and demonstrations are taking place in major cities across Morocco,” the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said.
“There are reports of significant police presence and rallies resulting in violent clashes. The situation remains unpredictable.”
The advisory added: “Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings and follow the advice of local authorities.
“Demonstrations may lead to travel disruption. Allow extra time for journeys and monitor local media for updates.”
Almost 300 police officers and civilians were reportedly injured on Tuesday night in youth-led protests against failing government services and spending for the FIFA World Cup, to be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain in 2030.
Police also made more than 400 arrests, according to the country’s interior ministry.
