Intrepid Travel will host a special trek to the summit of Morocco’s Mount Toubkal to raise money for the charity Education for All.
Supported by The Intrepid Foundation, Education for All (EFA) gives girls in the High Atlas Mountain region the opportunity to continue their education.
Very few girls from the rural communities get the opportunity to study due to accessibility, affordability and other cultural attitudes.
The epicentre of the earthquake last September was close to the area in which EFA operates boarding houses for girls. Five of the six boarding houses were severely damaged, with nearly everything needing to be replaced.
Many EFA girls lost family members and their homes and this charity trek will help EFA with the rebuilding of its boarding houses to ensure girls are able to pursue their education.
To raise funds, the charity trek to North Africa’s highest peak will take place from March 3-9, supported by an Intrepid guide and crew.
The group will get the chance to meet locals, experience Amazigh culture and learn about the impact of the recent devastating Morocco earthquake.
The farewell dinner will be hosted by Education for All (EFA), on International Women’s Day (March 8).
Zina Bencheikh, Intrepid’s EMEA managing director EMEA and EFA patron, said: “We are looking forward to hosting this special departure and supporting EFA to rebuild and allow girls to access education and live up to their potential.”
Sonia Omar, Education for All chief executive, added: “2023 was a challenging year for EFA and indeed everyone in the High Atlas region of Morocco. I can’t imagine a more exciting challenge for 2024, bringing breath-taking scenery, inspiring people and sense of purpose to the year ahead.”
The trek will be led by Intrepid guide Sara Chakir who is from a small village in the High Atlas Mountains.
Travellers will be required to fundraise a minimum of £250 per person to join the trek. All Intrepid’s profits made on this departure will be donated to EFA.
Last year, Intrepid launched a Morocco Earthquake appeal through its not-for-profit, the Intrepid Foundation, which has raised more AU$650,000 for its partners on the ground, including EFA.
The seven-day trek costs from £550. For more information and to book, click here.
