Guernsey aims for unrestricted summer travel

Guernsey has joined Jersey in outlining a gradual removal of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

A return to unrestricted travel to and from the island is likely to be possible by early July, linked to good progress being made in the roll-out of its vaccine programme.

Guernsey also intends to resume its categorisation of countries and regions at the end of April, meaning lighter travel restrictions for people arriving from places with a low prevalence of the virus.

The island’s government is emphasising that all dates are subject to change as there are still uncertainties ahead, such as the possible emergence of new Covid variants and the continued speed and success of the vaccination programme.

“There is also work still be to be done on the detail around what exactly travel will look like from July onwards, and to what extent arrivals will be required to test or carry some form of ‘vaccination passport’, a statement said.

“But nonetheless it is confident the timeframes set out are realistic, and will help islanders, visitors and businesses to plan ahead.”

Guernsey was forced to reintroduce lockdown measures in late January after four cases of the Kent variant were identified. These were lifted on Monday.

Maintaining strict controls on borders, including testing and self-isolation requirements for all arrivals, had allowed the community to live without social distancing, limits on gatherings or restrictions on business for much of the last 14 months.

Chief minister Peter Ferbrache said: “We are delighted to give both our local community and visitors some clarity on how we expect to move forward, including the full reopening of our borders.

“We know we are very fortunate in being able to enjoy life without restrictions domestically for much of the past year, but that’s also down to having top health experts and good decision-making, plus a fantastic community that has truly pulled together to tackle this virus.

“That gives us confidence as we now begin taking real steps towards more open borders and welcoming in more visitors soon.

“We have missed them, but we believe that our community’s success in responding to Covid-19 is one more reason to attract visitors to our beautiful islands.”
