Viking is preparing for a “milestone” next week with the naming of the 100th ship in its fleet of river and ocean vessels.
The disclosure came as the company, in its 28th year of operation, took delivery of its newest river ships to sail in Europe and the Nile in Egypt.
The Viking Honir will sail the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers, while Viking Thoth will be based on the Nile.
The delivery ceremony for Viking Honir took place in Basel, Switzerland and Viking Thoth at the Massara shipyard in Cairo.
The company expects to take delivery of 23 additional river ships by 2028 and 10 additional ocean ships by 2031.
With these orders, Viking will have 112 river ships in 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships in 2031.
Viking expects to take delivery of what is claimed to be the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, capable of operating with zero emissions, in last 2026. Viking Libra is being built at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy.
The 190-passenger Viking Honir is the latest identical Viking Longship, built specifically to navigate the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.
Viking Thoth has a capacity for 82 passengers and is an identical sister ship to five other Nile vessels, Viking Osiris, Aton, Sobek, Hathor and Amun.
Chairman and chief executive Torstein Hagen said: “We are proud to welcome the Viking Honir and the Viking Thoth to our growing river fleet.
“With the arrival of these elegant new ships, we are pleased to offer even more curious travellers the opportunity to explore some of the world’s most iconic waterways in Viking comfort.”
