Middleton Place: Located around 30 minutes from Charleston by taxi, the house museum and surrounding outbuildings that make up this former plantation show visitors what life was like here in the 18th century. The grounds, set beside the Ashley River, are stunningly beautiful, and the informative tours around the property are engaging for visitors interested in learning more about the history of slavery in the region.

Sullivan’s Island: There are lots of beaches and islands close to Charleston, each with their own appeal – but for those who just want to relax, Sullivan’s Island’s vast sandy beaches are ideal. Waterfront Park and Rainbow Row: Waterfront Park provides scenic views over the point where the Cooper River and Ashley River join with the Atlantic, luring visitors with its iconic, pineapple-shaped fountain. Rainbow Row is just a block away on E Bay Street and makes a beautiful spot to wander around with its colourful 18th-century houses.

Getting there…

Direct flights: British Airways launched a direct flight from Heathrow to Charleston this year, flying twice a week between March and October. It’s also possible to fly with Delta Air Lines via Atlanta, or via other cities on the East Coast.
