Heathrow set for ‘busiest Christmas’ in record year

Heathrow is gearing up for its busiest Christmas after achieving a record November by handling more than 6.5 million passengers.

Total passenger levels rose by 6.5% to almost 84 million in the period from December 2023, including a 6.1% increase last month.

The London hub expects to the number of passengers on Christmas Day to increase by 21% in comparison to last year.

The airport is also on target to see 25 routes hit a million passengers this year, up from 24 in 2023.

Singapore, Edinburgh, Lisbon, Abu Dhabi, Chicago, Zurich, Mumbai  and Paris routes all attracted one million passengers in the year to November, according to Heathrow.

Overall aircraft movements rose by 1.3% in November to more than 38,000, with annual volumes up by 4.9% to 472,900

Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye said: “This year has been all about providing high levels of service for record amounts of passengers at Heathrow, and November was no different. 

“As we embrace the festive season, our focus remains on ensuring smooth, joyful journeys-whether it is helping passengers get away for Christmas to reunite with their loved ones, or making sure cargo reaches its destination on time.”
