Politicians have urged the owners of Doncaster Sheffield airport to extend a consultation on the future of the site.
The future of the South Yorkshire airport is in doubt, after owner Peel Group said the site “may no longer be commercially viable” following the announcement that Wizz Air will withdraw, leaving Tui as the only airline maintaining a base at the facility.
Peel Group has now begun a six-week consultation, which has received backlash from three Doncaster MPs, aviation minister Robert Courts and two local mayors.
The politicians have urged the airport’s owner to extend the consultation until the end of the year.
In a letter, they wrote: “You should be under no illusion about the strength of public and political feeling on this matter and how damaging this is for Peel’s brand locally and nationally.
“We want to ensure you are equally committed and encourage you to develop options that will maintain aviation and commercial passenger operations at Doncaster Sheffield airport.
“Parties to this letter were disappointed that the consultation period was launched with little notice and for a short six-week period over the summer months. We encourage Peel Group to extend the consultation period until the end of 2022 to enable meaningful engagement and consideration of options.”
