Intrepid Travel has hailed an industry-first fashion event designed to support young female leaders and raise money for charities with projects supporting women as “a triple-win”.
The Travel Weekly Inspiring Women Fashion Forward showcase is designed to give those starting out in their careers the opportunity to build a professional wardrobe by purchasing items donated by established leaders who are keen to ‘pay it forward’.
It will bring together around 200 senior women and rising stars in the travel trade, with donated clothes and accessories available to browse and buy.
It is being organised by Travel Weekly in partnership with Intrepid Travel, Avis, Silversea and Hyatt, with all proceeds from the sale of items going to charities including the Intrepid Foundation.
The event will also feature an address from an inspirational speaker with links to the fashion industry, and the opportunity for young team members to network with and be inspired by the women at the forefront of travel today.
Intrepid UK director Joanna Reeve told Travel Weekly the company “knew immediately” that the event was “a perfect fit” as it ties in with the company’s ethos around sustainability and women’s empowerment.
“When we heard about Fashion Forward, we knew we had to get involved,” Reeve explained. “There are already many barriers to women reaching the more senior levels in business, and their wardrobe should not be one of them.”
Reeve said she would be donating “a mix of staples” from her own wardrobe and urged others to look out for clothes of their own that “could go to a new home”.
She added there was often an “undiscussed” expense of buying new clothes to meet a dress code for travel industry events, which can be “a real cost” when starting out.
“This can understandably lead to buying from cheap fast-fashion brands, which of course has an impact on the planet as well as adding financial pressure,” she said.
“Events like Fashion Forward where women can buy preloved clothing can make life easier for young women in the industry, presents a great networking opportunity and it’s better for the planet – a win-win.”
She said she hoped the event would provide “a fantastic chance” for women at all levels of the industry to come together and “build new relationships, open doors and unlock opportunities” while having a “real impact” for charity partners.
The money donated to the Intrepid Foundation will go to supporting women from disadvantaged backgrounds, she added, to help them learn new skills and access new opportunities to “take steps towards a better future”.
Reeve said the charity had many examples of this “in action”, adding: “In many countries around the world woman still face huge challenges, whether it’s lack of access to education and healthcare, poverty or barriers in the workplace.
“Through the Intrepid Foundation, we work with some amazing partners dedicated to gender equality.
“We know that supporting and uplifting women doesn’t only benefit the women themselves, but their families and wider communities too.”
