‘Sustainable’ sailing catamaran ferry service to launch from Dover

A niche new cross-channel ferry service using fast commercial sailing catamarans is due to launch next month.

It will use purpose-built sailing vessels to carry a maximum of 12 passengers.

SailLink is to operate between Dover and Boulogne with a crossing time of about four hours.

The first passengers during a pilot phase will sail from September 10-18 with a full daily service expected in spring 2023.

Initial prices are £85 for an adult one-way and £150 for a return.

The SailLink sailing vessels are fitted with electric propulsion for marina access and auxiliary power.

However, the company will work with existing ferry operators to carry passengers to maintain its itineraries when weather conditions would make a specific crossing “uncomfortable”.

Border checks will be conducted on departure and arrival by the mobile border agents.

The company is also evaluating routes between Ramsgate and Dunkirk and Newhaven to Dieppe.

The SailLink routes are designed according to the prevailing winds and tidal streams, as well as the accessibility and suitability of the ports.

During the crossing, passengers have the option of joining in with the sailing or helping with regular marine sampling and observations for the company’s research partners.

Founded by Andrew Simons, a boatbuilder, sailor and environmental scientist, SailLink was conceived as a green option for travelling between England and France.

He said: “We are delighted to commence our first crossing between these two great ports.

“We’ve received enthusiastic support from both the Port of Dover and port authority at Boulogne-Sur-Mer and greatly look forward to the launch in September.”

Port of Dover chief commercial officer Christian Pryce said: “We’re excited to play a part in this innovative project with SailLink, which ties their vision to deliver sustainable and active travel across the Channel in with the port’s ambitions to become an entirely green shipping corridor.

“Dover’s strategic location on the short straits crossing makes us an ideal location for the launch of this service and we look forward to working alongside the SailLink team on their upcoming pilot and to see how their operation develops.”
