Silversea president ‘hopeful’ about river cruise potential

Silversea president Bert Hernandez has said he is “always looking for opportunities” for growth, including a potential move into river cruises and opening more hotels.

Earlier this year, sister line Celebrity Cruises announced it would launch a 10-ship fleet on European rivers in 2027.

Speaking on a Travel Weekly webcast with editor-in-chief Lucy Huxley, Hernandez confirmed Silversea had also been “looking at” expansion into river cruise.

“It does take a long time to get it up and running, so we are hopefully going to be able to piggyback on [Celebrity] at some point,” he added.

“It is a natural evolution for the brand and there are a lot of destinations that our guests would enjoy visiting.”

Hernandez stressed there were “no decisions yet”, but added: “Over time, I think you will see us get into something [in river].”

Another potential area for growth would be the opening of more hotels to follow the luxury line’s  first in Puerto Williams, which is due to open in December 2025.

The hotel in the world’s southernmost city will host passengers on the Antarctica Bridge fly-cruise programme.

Hernandez called the hotel “a necessity” for these itineraries, adding: “If this works, we would love to do it again.”

Other priorities to “continue to grow” included further exploring opportunities in expedition cruise, he said, while there remain more opportunities in classic cruising with the line’s newest Nova Class ships.

Hernandez said Silver Ray and Silver Nova had introduced a younger demographic of new-to-cruise and new-to-brand passengers with the highest satisfaction rate in the fleet.

He also said the introduction of shorter combinable cruises had helped remove price and time barriers for customers.

Hernandez hinted the line was “looking at other projects” but did not commit to any new ships to add to the 12-strong fleet.
