Doncaster Sheffield airport consultation extended

The owners of Doncaster Sheffield airport have extended a consultation on the future of the site.

Last month, airport owner Peel Group said the site “may no longer be commercially viable” following the announcement that Wizz Air will withdraw, prompting an appeal from local politicians to keep the site open.

Peel Group launched a six-week consultation in July which was met by a backlash from three Doncaster MPs, aviation minister Robert Courts and two local mayors, who requested the consultation be extended until the end of 2022 to help negotiate the airport’s sale.

Peel Group has agreed to extend the consultation until September 16.

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones welcomed the extension, but deemed it too short.

She tweeted: “Essentially we have been given three more weeks to set out to Peel why @DSA_Airport should have a future life in the city and wider South Yorkshire region.

“I would have wanted more time as this is a complex issue, however I am grateful that our request has been listened to.”

In a separate tweet, she wrote: “@MyDoncaster and @SouthYorksMCA are working at pace to analyse all options to try and secure its future and save our airport.

“I believe there is considerable potential at DSA, with the capacity and connectivity to be the number one airport in Yorkshire and the North East.”
