Etihad Airways is ending a codeshare and frequent flyer partnership with Virgin Australia from next summer.
Passengers will no longer be able to book Virgin Australia-operated flights through Etihad’s booking channels.
The decision, which takes effect from June 1, 2025, “reflects a divergence in the strategic direction of the respective airlines,” the UAE carrier said.
“For Etihad customers with existing bookings that include a Virgin Australia-operated segment, there will be no changes to their itineraries.”
Gulf rival Qatar Airways last month announced plans to acquire 25% of Virgin Australia, subject to government approval. This follows two years of a strategic partnership.
Etihad flights to Sydney and Melbourne from Abu Dhabi will be increased for summer 2025.
The airline added that it “remains dedicated to serving Australia, as it has since 2007”.
Virgin Australia started an alliance with Etihad in 2010 to offer connections between Australia, the Middle East and Europe.
