Heathrow and MAG hail record-breaking August

Heathrow achieved its fourth consecutive record-breaking month this summer in August.

Almost eight million passengers were handled last month, a rise of 5.5%, meaning the London hub served 82.6 million travellers in the last 12 months.

Heathrow is now on course to see throughput of 30 million passengers between June and September – a first for the airport. 

Departing passengers remained consistently over 130,000 a day for most of August, with Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey proving popular summer destinations.

History was made on August 18 when 269,000 passengers passed through the airport on its busiest day ever.

August also saw a record 13 days with more than 260,000 passengers and its busiest week ever on August 13-19 with 1.8 million passengers.

Los Angeles and Madrid became routes attracting more than a million passengers a month, joining Doha, Dublin, Dubai and New York JFK.

Taylor Swift concerts brought in an additional 40,000 passengers this summer during the European leg of her Eras tour.

Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye said: “I’m grateful to Team Heathrow for their preparation and dedication to delivering an extraordinary getaway for more passengers than ever before, maintaining strong service levels during what has been our busiest summer. 

“For the past four months we have broken several new records, demonstrating our ability to open a world of opportunity for more people, cargo, business and the UK economy.”

Meanwhile, Manchester Airports Group (MAG) reported that almost seven million people using its three airports in August, a year-on-year rise of 6.6%.

That meant that across the summer peak of July and August more than 13 million passengers used Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airport.

August was a record month for Manchester airport as it served 3.4 million passengers, up 8.8% on August 2023.

Stansted also saw its busiest month with 3.1 million passengers, an increase of 4.9%.

Numbers using East Midlands airport rose 2.8% to more than 540,000 passengers.
