Tributes have been paid to Tim Wright, formerly of Travelport and Worldspan, after his death aged 76.
Wright held a number of senior roles in the travel industry over the course of his career, including vice-president of business development in the EMEA region at Worldspan.
Former Worldspan colleagues hailed his leadership qualities and described him as an inspiration, with further tributes referring to him as “an absolute gem of a man” and “an amazing chap with a passion for his family, football and his work teams”.
His family said they were “absolutely heartbroken”, but added they were taking comfort from the positive impact he had on others.
Wright, who died on December 22, was commercial director for the UK and Ireland at Travelport from 2009 - 2014 before taking on further roles in the industry.
Travelport’s Chris Burwell recalled Wright being a “strong leader with an incredible work ethic” when they worked together at the travel technology business.
“He was in the twilight of his career when I worked with him, but he was so energetic,” he said, adding that Wright’s positive attitude meant he was “loved” by customers.
“He always used to thank customers because he was genuinely appreciative of them giving him business, and it’s something I do now too,” he said.
Ex-Amadeus Gulf managing director Graham Nichols recalled working with Wright at Worldspan.
“He was an absolute old style professional with so much knowledge and a wonderful and friendly work ethic. He was a big chap with a big heart and he will be remembered with great fondness,”
he said.
Sean Van den Haute, also formerly of Worldspan, described Wright as an “absolute gem of a man” who acted as a mentor to many in the industry.
Wright was a much loved husband to Annette, father to three daughters – Katie, Gemma and Zoë – and a grandfather of seven.
His family said: “He was truly passionate about the travel industry and the businesses and people within it. He approached life with positivity, drive and lots of fun.
“The wonderful tributes to him are providing much needed solace to his family at this difficult time.”
