Prestwick hopeful of new Ryanair routes

New routes by Ryanair from Prestwick are being considered with the signing of a five-year deal with the Scottish airport.

The agreement was disclosed in financial results for the year to March published by the Scottish government-owned airport.

The report showed a rise in revenue from £35 million to £58 million year-on-year, mainly due to military flights using the Ayrshire facility.

Operating profits for the 12 months increased to £2.1 million from £1.9 million with passenger numbers more than trebling to 459,000 from 118,000.

The annual report said: “At the start of 2022 the travel sector predicted a strong summer season with unrestricted travel, but the impact of Brexit on the UK labour supply and the tightening of CAA regulations created a shortage of skilled labour for the aviation industry.

“However, the airport managed to adapt and recruit, avoiding passenger queues and delays, with our staff working hard to deliver a safe, secure and efficient service with passenger numbers substantially up on the previous year.

“We are pleased that we remain high up in the Ryanair’s key performance indicators and have agreed new terms with the carrier for another five years.

“Prestwick remains an important base for the carrier with an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility employing over 500 engineers at their facility at the airport, and we look forward to continuing to build on existing routes and add new routes to meet demand.”

Prestwick is also are working on supporting the change to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

A partnership with BP will lead to the supply of SAF to aircraft using Prestwick and the airport becoming a key supply point in Scotland.
