United Airlines resumes sales of global fare
UNITED Airlines is to resume its round-the-world service on April 1 next year, becoming the only airline to offer a single-carrier flight around the globe. The flights will link Washington with Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Delhi and Heathrow.
United will operate a Boeing 747-400 in three classes on all segments.
The airline first launched its round-the-world service in December 1995 but suspended the Delhi sector last autumn due to the Asian economic recession.
According to an airline spokesman, United is resuming the service due to a strong growth curve in the Indian market and growing demand in Delhi for access to the US, Europe and Asia.
United’s senior vice-president international Stuart Oran said: “We are in the unique position of being the only carrier that ties India to the US from both the east and west, London and Hong Kong.”
United’s restart of its India service to Heathrow will pitch it against a new Virgin Atlantic/Air India service, to be launched this July, and also beefed up British Airways flights.
The US carrier is expected to work with Star Alliance partners, including British Midland, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, on the new round-the-world initiative.
Star Alliance already offers a global air fare.
